Presented at SECOL 2025? Publish with the Southern Journal of Linguistics and consider self-nominating for the 2025 Student Excellence Award!

Student paper nominations are solicited for the SECOL Student Excellence Award 2025 (a $200 check, free one-year membership, and a publication at the SJL). Nominate a student paper that you were impressed with at the SECOL 2025 conference or self-nominate. Papers authored by students, whether they were single authors or first authors who collaborated with others, are eligible. Address nomination or questions to Rafael Orozco at rorozc1@lsu.edu.

2024 SECOL Student Excellence Award: José Julián Álvarez Retamales

Congratulations to the recipient of the 2024 SECOL Student Excellence Award for Best Student Paper, José Julián Álvarez Retamales! His paper “Examining Coda /r/ Variation in Puerto Rican Spanish” was unanimously selected as the winner, the scholarly achievement to be celebrated at the 2025 meeting of SECOL in Boca Raton. José is currently a PhD Candidate at the Department of Linguistics, NYU University. His work concerns identity in Latinx communities and its intersection with Blackness. Check out his website here.

SECOL Student Excellence Award 2023: Leah Nodar

Congratulations to the recipient of the SECOL Student Excellence Award 2023, Leah Nodar (a PhD Candidate, Linguistics Department, Purdue University)!!

Nodar’s paper “Pronominal Apposition, It Could Be Useful: Bringing Back an Abandoned Variable in Sociolinguistics” was unanimously selected as the winner, with a publication to follow in the Southern Journal of Linguistics.

UPDATED DEADLINE:

Abstracts for 20-minute papers should not exceed 400 words, excluding title and references. Authors may submit up to two abstracts (across both conferences), one individual and one joint. Abstracts will be accepted electronically through Oxford Abstracts between September 1 and November 17, 2023, at https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/6722/submitter .
